Japanese garden design - Everything you need to know about Japanese Gardens
There are probably more misconceptions about Japanese gardens than any other aspect of garden design. This is probably due to Europeans entering Japan and seeing gardens without understanding the culture that created them.
The unique characteristics of some of them were reported in the west and now everyone understands the main components of Japanese gardens although the details are a mystery and so are given religious significance. This approach is probably not helped by the small number of Europeans who have visited Japan and more importantly visited the many different styles of garden that actually exist.
Strangely the modern Japanese garden designers produce very clumsy work in comparison to the past. When the social and political history of Japan are combined with a practical knowledge of landscape materials the mystique vanishes and the route to good design becomes apparent.
